Compelling contemporary images of Australian Defence Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan are now available for viewing on Picture Australia
24 April 2008
The Australian War Memorial in 2003 appointed David Dare Parker as its official photographer and Lewis Miller as its official artist, to document the role of Australian Defence Force personnel deployed to the Second Gulf War. The artists have produced a vast array of paintings, sketches and photographs about the every day lives of Royal Australian Navy, Royal Australian Air Force, and Australian Army personnel in the war zone.
The Australian War Memorial also holds a large range of contemporary images relating to the Afghanistan conflict. These images produced by artists Peter Churcher, George Gittoes, and Sean Hobbs, document the involvement of the Australian Air Force and Australian Army. The Australian War Memorial has a long history of official war artists documenting conflicts, going back to the First World War.

Ourtown is designed to capture Australia’s rural and urban spaces, illustrating everyday activities such as your work or home.
You could find an historical image of your town in Picture Australia and then recreate the image and upload it to the Ourtown group, showing everyone how your community has developed over the ages.
As with the photographs in the People, places and events group, the photographs from ‘Ourtown’ will be made available through Picture Australia. Ourtown images will be available in Picture Australia after 15 April 2007.

Picture Australia's new look and feel
19 September 2007
Over the last year a cross-disciplinary design team in the Library worked to distill ideas coming from our participating agencies, Picture Australia researchers and from a Picture Australia Website Performance Expert Review by Nielsen //Net Ratings commissioned in 2006. Recommendations to improve the service included clearer navigation, relevance ranking of search results and a 'favourites' function.
The redesign has factored in rigorous research on what our researchers do and don’t do on the site. All this research and consultation has been integrated into the new design. Please Contact us to tell us what you think of the new site.
