Historical - Events - A contemporary newspaper illustration of some of the leading figures in the saga of the Kelly Gang, Australia's most notorious band of outlaws, emerging from the Glenrowan Hotel in his crudely made armour to shoot it out with besieging police. For 21 months during the period 1878-1880 the Kelly gang defied massive police attempts to capture them in rugged bush country in north - east Victoria. In that time they robbed two banks, held up two townships and shot and killed six people. Their lawless reign ended at the small township of Glenrowan, when a large party of police surrounded them. Ned was the only member of the gang captured alive. He was hanged at the old Melbourne Jail on November 11, 1880 [photographic image]. 1 photographic negative: b&w, acetate
